I don’t like the excessive engine/transmission movement on the std mounts of the 2zz-ge installs. The motor/transmission is mounted loose, the exhaust is mounted rigid – not ideal. I like lightweight materials but you have to use them carefully – taking note of the above. As a first taster on Ti exhaust components, I’ve made up some 7”dia Ti silencer skins and combined them with Stainless end-caps, lightweight Stainless pipework and an 89mm Ti tip to finish it all off.
I was the first in the UK to do this on Superbikes back in the early 90’s using a 110mm dia skin – waaay too small for a car exhaust though. The bracketry is all-stainless, my inbox has several e-mails relating the fracture of the Ti hangers on other systems – not something I need. In fact, if you look at some of the Ti turbo systems coming out of Japan, they all feature a Stainless saddle clamp arrangement for the silencer hangers. There’s got to be a good reason for that. I will be doing some R&D on the complete Ti system this winter. You can’t weld Stainless to Ti, so one end-cap is riveted and given that it would be crazy not to, the other end-cap is easily removable if re-packing ever becomes necessary – haven’t seen/heard about any yet – and don’t expect to. Now, welding the captive nuts and punching/riveting the end-caps is a time-consuming business – even the hanger bracketry is different. I wanted a “CLEAN” look to this system, so the brackets are all welded behind the pipework and nothing on the end-caps. Most owners who’ve ordered a 2bular Ti have specified the plain Ti finish but the burnt look is an option – up to you.
